Happy Birthday, Great Grandpa Berrett
176 years ago today, my great grandfather was born, the seventh of ten children of Robert and Sarah Griffen Berrett.
Richard’s father was a thatcher as well as a farmer, in the village of Steeple Ashton, Wiltshire, England. Richard wrote in his autobiography that he “attended the village school part of the time until nine years old.”
His parents were devout members of the Church of England and attended services regularly in the village. However in 1847 two Mormon missionaries came to the village of Steeple Ashton. After a period of learning about this new religion, Richard’s parents were baptized members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At that time Church members were advised to gather to Utah, and Richard’s parents made preparations to do so. Two years later on 6 February 1849, the Berrett family consisting of parents Robert and Sarah and 9 children, left their home sailing from Liverpool to the United States.
Richard’s story is truly one of hardship, but happiness. To be continued . .
